Stop

Interrupt the automatic sequence. The pressure to act now can pass for clarity, but what you usually need is one beat of space. You don't have to solve anything yet.

The cue

Not yet. One breath.

Smallest version

One breath. Feet. Not yet.

Common mistake

Using Stop to swallow what's true, or to turn falsely agreeable. That only pushes the reaction underground, and it comes back later. A real Stop makes space.

Notice

Get better information before you act, in this order: what your body is doing, what your system is trying to do, and only then what story is forming. The body gives data before the mind gives meaning.

The cue

Sensation. Urge. Story.

Smallest version

One sensation. One impulse. One story.

Common mistake

Analyzing instead of noticing: explaining, diagnosing, or building the case for why you're right. Stay close to what you can directly feel.

Allow

Let what's here be here, long enough to stay with yourself. Neither acting it out nor shutting it down. A feeling carries information, it isn't a verdict, and it doesn't last forever.

The cue

This is here. I can stay for one moment.

Smallest version

One breath longer than your habit. A hand on the chest or a softer jaw, if that helps.

Common mistake

Confusing it with flooding or collapse. Allow keeps you in contact: it isn't drowning in the feeling, acting it out, or making it who you are.

Plan

Support your body, then find direction. What would help your body right now? What support is already here? What need is underneath? What is one direction that serves it? You don't have to solve the whole situation.

The cue

Feet. Exhale. Room. Need. Direction.

Smallest version

Feet. Exhale. Room. Need.

Common mistake

Thoughtful reflection while the body keeps spinning, or the opposite: a grand strategy built while still activated. Plan is practical and small.

Choose

End in something you do. One clean next step: honest, proportionate, and easier to live with afterwards. Not the perfect sentence or the total repair, just the next step.

The cue

What choice will I respect later?

Smallest version

One cleaner move. Pick one of the five below.

Common mistake

Making it too grand, or taking dramatic relief for a clean act. The scorching text can feel like power for a few minutes. That isn't the same as clean.

Five clean choices

Wait
Not answering yet. Not sending it yet. Giving it ten minutes, an hour, or a night.
Ask
One honest question instead of assuming, accusing or mind-reading.
Name it
Saying clearly what's happening, what you feel or what you need, without a performance or a prosecution.
Leave and return
Stepping away cleanly, with a real time to come back, instead of escalating or disappearing.
Repair
Owning the miss: apologize, clarify, come back, clean up what can still be cleaned.
